Default 3.9 diff prices

Ok I rang a couple of places today (WA diff centre and Alfred cove Autos) and was qouted around $1800-1900 for 3.9 gears drive in drive out.. Is this price the norm? I thougt it was a bit steep considering I had an LSD with new bearings fitted to a Falcon a couple of years ago for under a grand.

Does anyone know any places in WA that can do a reasonable price?

A new set of gears is around $600, so you are looking at over a grand in labour and oils

New gears are between $700-$800.

The other 1000$ will be labour, seals, bearings and setting up the lash(pinion ect),remove and replcace housing, bleed brakes and the fluids. Its around the mark mate. Some places will be cheaper and some will be dearer.

If the place is local and has a good rep then go for it mate, price aint everything.

Whats a reasonable price in your books?

Do you know the labour rates at this place, could give you a better estimate.

These gears can be found in R31 skylines and the 4.11 gears are in the Pintara diffs. You can always get good 2nd hand 4.11s as the Pintaras arent hammered like the Skylines.

I knew the job would be over a grand but didnt think it would be bordering on 2.

I didnt realise the gears were that much. Labour would be close to $100 an hour Id say.

Just gotta be careful in finding good ones - pinny/skyline borgy gears can be very whiney!

Good idea, stay away from the second hand gears. I'd suggest going with 4.11's instead of 3.9's, if you are changing them go all out. even at $2k, the best value go fast mod that you can get.

Its not always the pinion and gears fault.Setup has a big role in it.

Its funny how someone gets a set of gears out of a car thats done 200,000kms and they made no noise in that car yet when transfered into a different but acceptable housing the wining starts? What does this tell you?

Pinion lash ect is very important and just slapping in gears will never work.

If money is a factor though sourcing a good 2nd hand set should not be shunned upon especially if its going to get the job done at the end of the day.If the gears seem to show signs of meshing ect then dont buy them. How many kms do youre gears have on them now and are they whiney?

Its weird how this is the mod that never gets done as it often really completes the package at hand and puts the power where one would most like, sooner.

But yeah, unles youre prepared to spend 2000$ then theirs only two options.
Leave it or 2nd hand.

Yeah its a mod I would like to do as the gearing with the 4 spd is rather crappy. Its just for 2k I dont want to fit them and it not do much. Then Im probably going to fork out for a blower. I do have the money I just have to be a bit careful with a mortgage and all.

I didnt see in youre signature it was auto.Thats a good time and mph for auto and stock gears. With gears and another tune I recon youll snag youre 13 second pass.

A set of 4.11s will blow you away in regards to bang for ya buck.Driven correctly on the street econimy wont suffer much at all.

In perspective a stock xr8 with 4.11 gears will hammer a stock xr8 with extractors and exhaust engines being of equall hp.Thats the bang for ya buck to expect but with you it will be made even more of due to the custom tune.

Ive noticed youve hinted supercharger down the track so id be getting the gears to accommodate that setup, wrong ones will compromise the charger.Positive Displacement or Centri?

If you change to 4.11's, how do you adjust the speedo? Is there a different speedo gear you can put in the box or do you need to use the jaycar adjuster?

Maybe get in contact with this guy... http://www.9bolt.com/gearsets.html

He's in the US, but should come in well cheaper than 600

WA Diffs did my 3.7s for $1650 a couple of years ago. They did a really good job and my diff is just ready for another rebuild now after a lot of punishment.

I had 3.9 diff gears put in a while ago and it cost me $1680. That included brand new gears, LSD cones, bearings and labour etc etc.

That was in Canberra, but I wouldn't imagine there would be too much fluctuation in prices between the states.

While I'm reasonabley happy with the difference the 3.9's gave me, I could think of better ways to blow 2 grand on a car...

Are they used? Ok, I thought they were new. Haven't read the site properly. They're for our diffs, the BW78, also known as the GM 9 bolt in the states.

bought a ute diff from the for sale section for $300 as my car is an open wheeler and i am getting the 3.45s changed to 3.9s, new bearings, oil and the centre needs to be shimmed to fit a sedan. im getting it all done for $1100 including them swapping over the centre and putting the new one in so all in all its a very good quote.

another place wanted to charge me 270 for taking out the old centre and putting in the new and $1050 to send the centre off to a diff place just to have the gears setup.
