Speed is a major contributor to the severity of an accident, but it's not the cause. Going over the speed limit doesnt all of a sudden make you lose control of your car, not having the skills for the conditions is what makes you lose control. Unless of course you have a situation where the travelled speed was above the rating of the tyres and you have a blow out.

ISA wont help when you are doing 100kmh on the Monash in a hail storm.

If the gov was truly serious about road SAFETY, their justification for any measure to attempt to reduce the road toll would include figures showing the reduction (if there is one) of serious (intensive care visit) injuries caused by car accidents, not just deaths.

I reckon you would be betting against good odds if you thought that the road toll would be a lot higher if it werent for the safety advances in cars over the years. In 2007 the average age of cars in Australia was 9.7yrs, so the average car was a 1997/98 model. Now in 2009, if the age is the same, the average car is now a 99/00 model.
I'm positive the reduction in the number of people dying in car accidents is offset by an increase in serious injury that requires a visit to intensive care followed by intense rehabilitation. How much does that cost the gov each year?

I highly doubt that the revenue from speed cameras even comes close to covering the cost to the healthcare system.

If only the government had a clue.
/End Rant.

Yes journalists are a worry aren't they. She should be suspended from her post for 2 weeks for that gaffe.
Worldwide the total of deaths is just over a million now.

This gives a more accurate definition of the stats for us.
2008 was one of the lowest tallies for quite a few decades, and there has been a bit of a spike for 2009 (till October), but all in all deaths are coming down.

so tell me if the QUEENSLAND population goes up 1500 people a fortnite/month and the road death toll goes up by say 15-20 people a year, does that mean that the road death toll is rising or going down ??????
THE government or there cronies need to get their head out of there AAARRRSSS, and get a reality check
the road toll has many contributing factors ,EXPERIENCE ,ROAD CONDITIONS,DRIVER FATIGUE,DRINK DRIVERS ECT ECT
TELL me how a 18-19 year old can handle v6 vechicles when they cant even handle a push bike ????

it is only a matter of time...especially if governments can see a buck in it for themselves. this is just another dangerous step along the short road of big brother controlling everything we do. how long until they track where you go, how long you were there for, who else was there etc. very insidious....

however, on a positive note, there are no computers on older cars, so they cant interfere unless there is some forced retro fit of gps rubbish.

Well I am 18 and drive a BF XR6 and multiple different brand new cars for work and have never had a crash and drive sensibly when in control of a vehicle. Again you assume all 18 year olds are the same however this is not true.

I do see young P platers doing the wrong thing and cringe at the thought of: a)Them crashing and killing themselves.. b) What problems their actions may have on me if the government says they want to do more to stop 18 year olds from crashing. ie: more vehicle restrictions

Written like a true 18 year old!

Speed in and of itself does not kill. Speed is just distance over time. It's the sudden stop when you lose control and hit an immovable object, or someone pulls out in front of you and you can't stop in time, that does all the damage. In some situations, speeding up may actually save your life; but that's not a message any government would push. If cars were speed limited, then one aspect of the ability to get out of trouble may be removed

For example, as you are going down the highway travelling at the appropriate speed limit, you spy an out of control car coming towards you from the rear, but you can't pull over....what do you do? You'd want to increase your speed until you get to somewhere where you are out of their way, but you can't due to a restrictive device that tells the car you're not allowed to, so you swerve to the other side of the road only to have a head on with the car that just came around that bend!

Look, we were all young once, and I was also one of them more sensible (but car-guy) 18 year olds. HOWEVER, and its a BIG however, my first car was my old mans VTSS (Gen 3), second VY SS (6 speed manual), 3rd Ba F6 Typhoon, 4th FG F6... Touch wood, but I have not been involved in an accident, nor have had any fines etc. Pulled over numerous times for vehicle, licence checks etc (Must have been the P plates on the SS LOL). Its the RESPECT I have formed with these vehicles that has kept me doing the right thing. Some people never get it, and maybe this speed thing in our new vehicles is the answer (I doubt it), but without respect for any car we will continue to see many unnecessary accidents on the road. Driver training i believe is more important (I learnt so much from the FPV driver track day), and a system of tiered licencing where on a highway,a higher tiered person can travel at say 130km/hr (yeah adelaide country roads are quiet), and say 100 for the first tiered drivers. But whats stopping us from doing something like this is our crap roads.. But these have no impact on the amount of accidents that happen on our roads, its just our speeds... Yeah right.. LOL! :-)

Off on a (big) tangent, if they wanted to get serious about road safety, I'd be suggesting to clear start clearing some trees from the sides of roads. I'll attempt to steer back to the topic at hand, or not..... but in so many places, we have these dense tree-lined corridors, which although they look pretty, provide habitats etc., they give little to no escape route for say, a car overtaking, or out of control, or from a side road..... eg "do I close my eyes and hope for the best, or take my chances amongst the trees"..... But, that would upset the greenies, would generate work, take a tiny bit of pressure off the forests etc. Sorry, if this is too off-topic

Not a bad theory LOCO, but it would be a MASSIVE undertaking that i'm sure no government would be prepared to undertake.
I'd imagine Accidents involving roadside flora would be a minority compared to vehicle/vehicle incidents, etc.

NOT ONLY THE FAUNA ???? WAT ABOUT THE ARROGANT FARMERS THAN DONT FENCE THEIR PROPERTYS,(i hit a stray cow at 100kmh,(luckily in a new 4x4 or would be dead, 2 years later still have not received any or all compensation, car is still in holding yard ,the farmer is renowned for stray cattle,(council fines ect ect,)and yet nothing is done ,WHY DOES HE GET AWAY WITH IT ??? WHY ???
MULTIMILLIONAIRE !!!!!,and im just a little guy with little money !!!!!
but all aside if EVERYBODY drived to the road conditions (wet roads ,ruff surface ect ect)and stopped being in such a RUSH,there probably WOULD BE less ROAD TOLL
it the government spent our road taxes (we pay that in our rego DONT WE )on our roads and not lined all there pockets then the road toll might decress ????
BUT HEAVENS FORBIDE THEY DO THAT !!!!!

Wouldn't all these cars with stability control and all that reduce the amount of crashes from spinning out in crappy conditions anyway? Just make it mandatory for all new cars to have all those electrics.

I have a new car actually, and I'm 18. Its called living at home and having a job since I was 15. (Granted it was only $18,000 but hey how many other 18 year olds do you see with a new car from their own hard earned?)

Though, they did ask me if I wanted traction control and I said no LOL. I'm not paying an extra $1000 for a computer to intervene on a car with 88kw. It does have ABS though, which is good.

I try, I mean I really try and work out how one can drive at a "safe speed" for the prevailing circumstances, and yet miss something as BIG as a moo on the road or to its side. (What if a rotten kid)?

Unless of course the scribe is "speed-limit conditioned", then that would explain it.

I didn't mean to sound like a big headed 18 year old. Why is that as soon as I say I am 18 I get bombed with older people saying that I am just lucky and it has nothing to do with the way i drive. I understand I am still young and an accident may happen one day.

As for dangers on our roads, I have been in a few close calls but have not had the accident that could have resulted because I have either moved out of the way or stopped.

I am not in favour of this new system now after somebody above gave a scenario of a car behind yours and you would have to speed up and break the speed limit. It just makes sense to have that option if need be

Like posted by someone else above I own my own car which I bought for $28,000 through working full time for a few years and live at home.

If anything other than cars killed that many people each year they'd ban it.

Cows, unlike sheep, don't run away from an approaching car. they'll often stand there until they are hit. : Sheep usually get hit trying to run with their flock, crossing the path of an oncoming car.
