Yes. ... Go out to your car. Turn it on. Put it in drive. Put your left foot hard on the brake, and your right foot on the accelerator. Rev it alittle bit and if your rear drops then you know that you have IRS.

Yep all VCT equipped cars have IRS

Easy way to check is if the exhaust goes under the diff, if it does its IRS

Ok just went out to my car and looked under. The exhaust runs to the side of the dif not under it.

I would have thought the easiest way is to look under the back.

If it has leaf springs, it doesn't have IRS.

Most if not all IRS exhausts (Even aftermarket) go under the diff in the centre like so, this is mine V8 though so I6 has 1 pipe

True, but all Falcon sedans since XE have coil springs :

Though if you can't tell a live axle from an IRS you really shouldn't be modifying your car IMHO :

Whoops...My Barge has IRS and the only other AU I've looked under was a Wagon, so I assumed if it was a live axle it was leafs all the way :

easiest way to tell... look under the car. live axle is like a stick going from wheel to wheel with a big round lump in the middle. IRS looks like it has arms. sorry for my crude explanations lol
but... google is your friend here!
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...n/IRS_diff.jpg
that was IRS
http://www.themustangnews.com/photos...ov-08live1.jpg
that was live axle

even better, here is a side by side picture!

I was thinking the same which is why I didn't respond to this thread yesterday. I'm afraid I have seen too much sheet done to too many nice cars by too many Idjits over the years that I now have no patience for them.

I fail to see the issue, its a simple question. Have you not asked a question that seemed stupid to someone else?

I really wanted IRS in my car so I tried your test ... started it up, selected D, left foot on brake, right foot on "go" pedal. Result ... well, first the back squatted; I mean really squatted (351C up the front) ... then my foot slipped off the brake pedal ... then the ute went through the back wall of the garage and down a 2m drop. While it was perched there with it's backside pointing skywards I had a look under the back end and LO AND BEHOLD NO IRS - just the damn leaf springs that were always there! To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.:

I can understand modifying if you don't know what it does but act on expert advice but if you're planning to fit those yourself I'd be a little worried if you couldn't tell live axle or IRS. I once didn't know the difference but I wasn't about to pull my suspension apart at the time :P

Seriously? .. That's got to suck. But that's how it is in most cars I have driven (and with my family thats a freaking lot lol). For example, my Fairmont, when I select D and drop the end it raises. And in the Fairlane it drops. . Same as all Commodores, and pretty much close to everything

The 'rise' you talk about in live axle cars is torque twist.

Sorry, but for me, thats way too tempting. Big driveway, stalling it up, stall it a bit more, ok plant it. MMmmm, smoke.

Seriously, food for thought, My monty used to Raise in the rear, this one squats. Monty was on SL's, this one is stock height.

Well mate that's why I asked before I did any pulling apart. Isn't it what this forum is for, asking questions? It's no biggie I'm just going to swap the springs over and then do it.

Thanks for all the info guys really appreciate it.
