Default Chinese electric supercar breaks Nurburgring record

I didn't make up the thread name, that's how is appeared as the headline in the Sydney Morning Herald.

Quote:
Move over Tesla: Electric supercar posts shock Nurburgring time

This is the sound of the future.

A common observation of electric cars is that they are either silent or just a little too clinical in comparison to the roaring petrol-powered motors used by conventional cars.

But the emerging trend for all-electric supercars looks set to change that with a soundtrack that mixes Formula E with a little bit of Le Mans and general race car goodness.

NIO, a Chinese electric car company, has seized headlines with its new EP9, an all-electric model to rival the world's fastest cars.

And it sounds sensational.

Piloted by ace racing driver Peter Dumbreck, the EP9 recorded an impressive 6m49.0s lap of the famed Nurburgring Nordschleiefe circuit, a marker some six seconds faster than Lamborghini's outrageous Huracan Performante.

Watch as the battery-powered beast smashes Lamborghini's benchmark.

The 1000kW, 1480Nm machine has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 2.7 seconds and a 0-200km/h time of 7.1 seconds, making it quicker than supercars such as the new McLaren 720S.

Lamborghini currently holds the production car lap record around the 'ring. NIO can't claim to have taken that crown just yet as the EP9 has not reached production, and it looks as though the team used race-spec tyres that cannot be used on the road.

Still, it is a sign that the future of performance is undoubtedly electric.

The acceleration on that thing is immense, it's just a relentless and constant surge of torque.
I would love to experience driving something like that.

Easy, spend ten grand on a used gsxr1000 or zx10 etc to achieve similar acceleration times

Changing of the guard from combustion to electric right here.

Car looks great, and very impressive how it did not move around at all. Loved the heavy breathing from the driver at the end of the straight, when breaking for the high speed turn in.

Sound- well reminds me playing scalextric with my brothers, the sound, controllers getting so hot that they burned your hands, and the smell of burning electric motors and frying brushes.

Like going back full circle.

The Bugatti Chiron is both quicker and faster than this "RC car"...

Someone should line them both up for a top speed run... the result will be hilarious !

Wonder if we can presume most electric vehicles will be quick?

Might this also mean the impending end of wheezing dual cab 4x4's, etc holding traffic up?

Should be right unless you put it in your pocket.

Awesome vehicle, though. They found something I would love to own that was made in China.

All the electric car people have to do for the performance variants is to develop a signature sound that represents electric performance, as is hinted by this video.
Example how people like the sound of a angry V8 in petrol cars.
They have to get away from the silence and give them some soul.

The thing with electric is they all won't be mega powerful but they will all have torque everywhere, no power band, no spooling no on off cam situation. Electric motors have max torque from zero...

And just drop in a bigger electric motor for more power..

World would have been a different place if electric cars had taken off instead of petroleum fuels at the turn of the 19th century. The Middle East would have remained in abject poverty.

If the only way to keep the Falcon running indefinitely and maintain the ability to punch well above its weight is to electrify it, I'm happy to join the bandwagon. Looking for a wrecked Tesla and somehow fit its drivetrain underneath a BA or FG

Bad news would be law enforcement getting these cars. No getting away from mr plod if even a 900k McLaren can't leave his chinese made electric pursuit car for dead

And there is nothing to stop people converting / combining old school and new school tech...

Video goes for a while, but pretty cool (if you can get past the no V8 rumble)...

Having driven a Tesla and flogging it I cant even imagine what this thing would be like. For the daily commute once the infrastructure is up to spec EV's are pretty damn good.

Yeah true I mentioned it once before...we all can't afford a new car or even want a new car..

What if we roll in / roll out, our beloved falcon and have someone drop in a 500kW electric motor...

Some really smart guy will make mega $$, I'd hazard a guess the conversion industry fitting electric motors to older cars will be big business.

Regulations look to be going the other way and mandating a minimum drive by noise level as well as maximum. The concern is indeed the danger of silent vehicles

All that needs to happen is to fit some straight cut gears and you will have sound..

Not sure why the complaint about no sound, not like a new corolla makes any sound..

Conversions are already taking place. I'm watching with interest the fella over the road building an electric Suzuki Sierra, learning alot from him.

Saw an electric Mustang at a EV 'come and try day' a while back. Didn't get to drive it but for ten bucks we got to drive four other cars, best fun I've had in a while and never thought it would be my old man that got cautioned for his spirited driving in the Volt

As for the lack of noise, a peg and a bit of cardboard worked on our bmx's as kids...

I'm excited for this tech to be affordable and mainstream.

For me the hardest thing to get used to would be the transmission. 1 speed sounds boring as hell. I wonder if they'll make them with multispeed boxes
