Default Dick Johnson's XC falcon hardtop (Auction) + more

DJ's XC Coupe up for auction plus plenty more....

https://www.lloydsonline.com.au/LotD...gs=100&gv=True

Quote:
Dick Johnson's XC falcon hardtop race car. This is the genuine Bryan Byrt ford race car driven by Ford hero Dick Johnson in the touring car championship in 1978 and 1979. Built by Bryan Byrt ford and Dick Johnson this car was campaigned successfully during the 78/79 touring car seasons and ran at Bathurst 1978 and 1979. This car is in race ready trim with original and current cams logbooks, it also comes with Dicks race suit and helmet. This car would have to be one of the most collectable falcon hardtops in Australian Motor sport history.
and the rest....

Didn't Dick raid that car of its key mechanical hardware to create his first Tru-Blu XD?

yep, its well known the hardtop was gutted of everything racing related and rebuilt using the driveline from the XD that replaced it and the hardtop was supposed to have been sold off as a used car....

Always assumed that this car, which has been around, was the second car from 78. That's incorrect. Here is the story from V8 Sleuth. It was gutted but the owner has rebuilt.

Back in the day, transplanting the driveline and other race gear from your previous model race car to a new model was pretty much standard practice for the battlers/privateers, unlike the bigger factory guys who had the $$ and facilities and who where developing/building the next seasons car, the one car guys usually had to wait until the end of the season before getting stuck in to building the next one, and even then it was a case of beg borrow and steal to have a car ready, so fitting already built and proven race equipment made good financial sense….

Quite a few XY-A-B-C-D's ran the previous models running gear (or parts thereof) until the $$ and time allowed the building/fitting of new equipment....

Yes that was the case with most Touring cars of that era, but not just for financial reasons.

All of the A9X Toranas & XC Hardtops were allowed by CAMS to run the engines from the previous models. So the A9Xs ran with L34 engines & the XCs ran with XB 4V engines. This was because of the pollution laws of the time, where it would cost too much in a short time to get the emission engines up to speed.

This changed with the intro of the XD & Commodores. In both cases they had to go back to the (factory standard) small port heads.

That being the case, DJ wasn't allowed to run the 4V 351 engine, so how much of the XC Hardtop was transferred to the XD. Also I know he ran the Super T10 4-sp in the XD, was this used in the Hardtop ?

"It was found in a paddock with a tree growing through the empty engine bay"

So what has it been rebuilt with? What engine and drive line?
It's currently at $190K, but I'd be quite sceptical about how race original it actually is. That's a lot of coin.

To be fair though, so was the Norm Beechey Monaro which the Bowdens now have in their collection.

I believe for it to be properly recognised, and allowed to compete in historic Group C races, it will require a CAMS "Certificate of Description".

If it does have this, then it will certainly be of value.

It was gutted of it's race gear, converted back to a road going car using the running gear from DJ's ex police XD and sold by BB Ford to a private owner if memory servers so god knows what running gear it has now.

Many of the coupe runners just threw XB/C front ends on their XA/B's, i've even seen an XD with the donor coupe's rollcage inside back in the early 80's -Ron Lindau (WA) did this, had a mighty crash and made it out.

In today's news: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...s-340-000.html

Interesting it was all Group C certified, and they were expecting it to fetch over $500k.
