There should be a certain point where the switch moves that the light doesnt come on. But it will when you open the door!

well if it works when he turns it on manually id say the globe is fine, check the driver door switch to see if it is getting stuck closed, i had a car that did that.
its a small black pin located just infront of the hinge on the body of the car inside the door jam, if it sticks in when the doors open then push at it or grease it an it should work, that aside a lot of theft recovered cars get wires cut so it may have had that done....

Could just be the swith position on the light i.e OFF/AUTO/ON (maybe not in that particular order), but make sure you put it on auto and it should work when you open the doors.

E-series interior lights dont have on off door switches on them well not that i have scene. I would say that the door switch is playing up probably just needs some lubrication.

Check the contacts in your door switch's, they are prone to corrosion and breakage.
this will cause your lights not to come on when you open the door, but come on when you use the switch.

I Changed all mine to LED so it lights up blue at night, also makes it hard to see anything inside the car at night so if some one breakes into my car it makes it harder for them and it looks good,
