Default Strange Starting Problem

hi all, have just bought a 2000 Fairlane 5L, only problem is when i go to start the car it will sometimes wind over and fire, but if it doesnt first time it will then wind and sort of lock and then i have to turn the key all the way of and do it again. this can go on for five minutes, when it does fire it is fine after that until the car is cold.

Alot of the starting problems here seem to be not enough charge in the battery, how old is it and have you had it tested lately?
